Trabant 601

Automobiles

The Trabant 601 is a small automobile produced in East Germany from 1963 to 1990, built with a body of Duroplast, a resin reinforced with recycled cotton fibers, in place of scarce steel. It became the most common car in East Germany under decades of central planning and, after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, a widely photographed symbol of the country's economy and its collapse.
