The Peugeot 104 is a supermini car that the French company Peugeot built from 1972 to 1988. Paolo Martin designed it, and it was introduced at the September 1972 Paris Motor Show as a compact four-door fastback with a separate boot, powered by a 954 cc all-aluminium Douvrin engine developed jointly with Renault and carrying its gearbox in the sump, as on the Mini. A three-door coupé on a shortened chassis followed in 1973 and a three-door hatchback in 1974, and in July 1976 a five-door hatchback replaced the saloon. It was the first model built at the Mulhouse plant and the first new Peugeot since 1955 not offered with a diesel engine. Its best year was 1977, when 190,000 were built, and in 1983 the range was trimmed to make way for the 205, although the car stayed on sale in France until production ended in 1988.
