Nissan Cherry

Automobiles

The Nissan Cherry, called the Datsun Cherry in its early years, is a series of subcompact cars that formed Nissan's first front-wheel drive supermini line, with the E10 and F10 generations and a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. Before the 1966 merger Prince Motor Company had planned a mass-produced front-wheel-drive car, and after the merger the Cherry was released in 1970 as Nissan's first. In Japan it was sold exclusively at Nissan Cherry store locations. The E10 used four-wheel independent suspension and inline four-cylinder A-series overhead-valve engines of 1.0 and 1.2 litres, and the F10 added a 1.4. In Britain it sold just over 6,000 in 1971 and more than 30,000 the next year. The Nissan Pulsar appeared in May 1978 as its successor, the Cherry name was dropped in Japan, and the F10 was finally replaced in Europe in March 1979, while the Pulsar kept the Cherry name in some markets.
