Mercedes-Benz A-Class W168

Automobiles

The W168 is the first generation of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the front-wheel drive five-door hatchback that was presented in late 1996 and launched at the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show, with production starting in August 1997. It was the first complete exterior designed by Steve Mattin. Between 1997 and 2004 1.1 million were sold, and a facelift in February 2001 added a wheelbase 170 millimetres longer. After a moose-test rollover in 1997 the maker recalled the 2,600 cars sold, stopped sales for three months and added electronic stability control. It had four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. DaimlerChrysler invested 900 million euros in the Rastatt plant that built it.
