The Lancia Ypsilon built from 2003 to 2011 is a segment B car that replaced the earlier Y and was itself replaced by the next generation presented in 2011, although it stayed on the price list for two more years as the Ypsilon Unyca. Internal project 843, it was the entry car of the Lancia range, aimed at young buyers and particularly popular with women, and cost Fiat Auto 500 million euros to design and tool. It used a shortened version of the Pianale B of the second generation Fiat Punto, shared with the Fiat Idea and Lancia Musa, with a front transverse engine driving the front wheels. Production was about 60,000 a year, first at the Fiat plant in Melfi. Engines were 1.2 and 1.4 litre petrol units of the FIRE family, also sold as petrol and LPG EcoChic versions, and a 1.3 litre Multijet diesel.
