The first generation of the Lancia Delta is a mid sized car built by Lancia from 1979 to 1993, 525,231 of them including the sporting versions. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, it appeared in autumn 1979 as the replacement for the Fulvia, which had been out of production since 1976, and it was named Car of the Year for 1980. It was built in four series: 1979 to 1982, 1983 to 1986, 1986 to 1990 and 1991 to 1993, not counting the Evoluzione cars assembled by Maggiora until 1994. It began with two four cylinder in line engines derived from those of the Fiat Ritmo, and a 1929 cc turbodiesel of 80 horsepower was added in 1986. The second generation Delta replaced it in 1993.
