The first Verona was released in November 1989 as a stronger competitor for the Chevrolet Monza, which then led the mid size market, although it was based on a smaller car. It replaced the Del Rey and was derived from the second generation European Orion, with a unique two door sedan body with a higher rear end. It was sold alongside the Volkswagen Apollo, a badge engineered twin, and it was based on the European Ford Orion.
