For 1956 the Thunderbird gained more trunk space by mounting the spare wheel on the outside of the rear, and the exhaust tips were moved to the ends of the bumper. Air vents were added behind the front wheels to improve ventilation of the cabin. To improve rear quarter visibility with the hardtop in place, round porthole windows were offered as a no cost option, and they would become a visible feature of the car.
