The 1996 Taurus had a controversial all new oval exterior and interior, the first complete redesign of its look since 1986, with chief designer Jack Telnack likening the shape to a pair of slippers. It was available in GL and LX models at launch, with a base G model added midway through the year, and for the first time had no optional engine. The LX used the new 200 horsepower 3.0 liter Duratec V6. It was still the best selling car in the United States.
