In 1993 Ford Canada hand built 40 Mercury Sables powered by SHO V6 engines as part of its Aluminum Intensive Vehicle program and released 20 of them to the public, using aluminum suspension parts and body panels joined by spot welding and adhesive. The Taurus itself carried on in its second generation with the GL as entry model, the LX and the SHO, and standard dual airbags. In size the second generation sat between the Tempo and the Crown Victoria.
