By 2005 the Taurus was no longer in the top ten in United States sales, having lost its top spot to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry in 1997. Ford had by then brought out the Five Hundred and the Fusion to take over the Taurus's place, and the last Taurus wagons had been built the previous December, leaving the four door sedan, much of it sold to fleet buyers. It was still a mid size front wheel drive car, as it had been since 1985.
