The Taurus went on sale at the very end of 1985 as a 1986 model and became an instant hit, with more than 200,000 sold in its first model year. It was first offered in four models, the base L, the four cylinder five speed MT-5 aimed at Japanese imports, the GL and the LX. Motor Trend called its shape the shape of tomorrow, and the car's rounded look was soon seen in future themed films such as the 1987 RoboCop.
