The Taurus returned for 2008 after a break of less than a year, as a mid cycle revision of the Ford Five Hundred, which made it a full size car for the first time and Ford's flagship sedan. On the Volvo derived D3 platform it gained all wheel drive as an option, a six speed automatic and a standard overhead cam V6. The Mercury Sable returned as a twin, and the Freestyle crossover became the Taurus X.
