The RS200 was started in 1984, after Ford Motorsport had begun developing a rear drive turbocharged variant of the third Escort for Group B rallying, and it was built by Reliant for Ford at Shenstone. It needed at least two hundred road legal cars to qualify for the rally class. The RS200 was a road going car built so that Ford could enter a competition car in Group B rallying. Its body was made by a British fibreglass specialist, with a mid mounted turbocharged engine and four wheel drive.
