For 1981 the side view mirrors were remounted farther back on the doors, and Ford increased the fuel efficiency of its full size cars with a smaller 4.2 litre V8 of 120 horsepower as an option. The 4.9 litre V8 received throttle body electronic central fuel injection in place of a carburetor. It was the Ford counterpart of the Mercury Grand Marquis and shared a body style with it. The LTD Crown Victoria was the full size Ford of the 1980s, built on the rear wheel drive Panther platform.
