Ford identified the mechanism leading to most of the fires in the South African Kugas as overheating caused by a lack of coolant circulation, which could crack the cylinder head, cause an oil leak and then a fire in the engine compartment. The three recalls implemented between January 2017 and January 2018 replaced parts to fix this. The second generation Kuga was in its last full year before the third generation was shown.
