It followed the Vertrek concept developed over nine months at Cologne and was made in Valencia, with Ford claiming 80 percent parts commonality with the Escape. Beginning in 2012 for the 2013 model year it was marketed in North America as the Escape. The first generation Kuga had become available in Australia in March 2012.
