In 2007 Alan Mulally, shortly after becoming chief executive, called for a revision of the Ford and Mercury ranges, and for 2008 the Freestyle was revised and renamed the Taurus X. It could be had with a 3.5 litre V6 and a six speed automatic, and the Eddie Bauer Edition was offered. The Freestyle was a seven seat crossover built on the D3 platform, a revised version of the Volvo P2 platform, at Chicago Assembly. It shared its platform with the Five Hundred and the Mercury Montego, and no Lincoln Mercury version was ever built.
