The Freestyle was introduced as a 2005 model in place of the Taurus station wagon, as a crossover utility vehicle, which was then a new market segment. It had front wheel drive as standard and was nominated for North American Truck of the Year, placing second behind the Escape Hybrid. It shared its platform with the Five Hundred and the Mercury Montego, and no Lincoln Mercury version was ever built. The Freestyle was a seven seat crossover built on the D3 platform, a revised version of the Volvo P2 platform, at Chicago Assembly.
