The Focus won the 1999 European Car of the Year award in its first full year on sale. Ford of North America began marketing its version in the autumn of 1999, ahead of the 2000 model year, with some changes from the European car. The North American car was launched as a three door hatchback, a four door sedan and a five door wagon. The Escort remained available in Europe at Halewood as a budget alternative until 2000.
