Ford of Europe brought the Focus to market in 1998 to take over from the Escort, with sales beginning in July. The name had been settled in early 1998, because management had first meant to keep Escort for the next small family car. A German court, acting on a case from a publisher, briefly ordered Ford to avoid the Focus name in Germany that July. The first Focus came out of Saarlouis and Valencia, since Halewood was being switched to the Jaguar X-Type.
