The Flex had a single generation, based on the Ford D4 chassis architecture, a variant of the D3 platform shared with the 2011 to 2019 Explorer and the Lincoln MKT. It was approved for 2009 production after the 2005 Fairlane concept shown at the Chicago show, entered production in June 2008 at Oakville Assembly in Ontario and was offered with a Duratec V6 or a twin turbocharged EcoBoost V6. A facelift came for 2013. Its model years run from 2009 to 2019.
