At its 2009 launch the Flex was offered in SE base, SEL mid level and Limited top trims, in six or seven passenger seating configurations, the latter with a second row bench seat. It had entered production in 2008 at Oakville Assembly in Ontario, where it was built beside the Lincoln MKT, and sales in 2009 were 38,717, fewer than Ford had expected each year. The Flex was the successor to the Taurus X.
