The XR2 was replaced in 1992 by a Zetec sixteen valve version, and the RS Turbo was supplanted by the RS1800, which used a 1.8 liter version of the Zetec engine in place of the turbocharged 1.6. The RS1800 shared its engine with the 130 PS version of the Escort XR3i and had a top speed of 125 miles per hour. In 1992 Ford also built prototype cars with Orbital two stroke direct injection engines, though they never reached production.
