The third generation Fiesta, code named BE-13, went on sale in February 1989 with UK sales starting in April. It rode on a new platform that replaced the old solid rear axle with a torsion beam of the semi independent type, looking radically different, and for the first time it came as a five door hatchback as well as a three door and a van. The mild Fiesta S, the first sporting version of the new car, arrived in the first half of the year, and the XR2i followed.
