In 1982 the Fiesta was outsold in the United Kingdom by British Leyland's new Austin Metro, and with new superminis from Volkswagen, Vauxhall and Opel, Nissan, Fiat and Peugeot launched or about to be launched, Ford set about revitalizing the car. This was the last year of the original design, which kept its transverse engine, four speed transmission and coil sprung suspension until the Mk2 appeared in August 1983.
