The all new fifth generation Fiesta was unveiled on 1 April 2002, and production at the Almussafes plant in Spain began on 29 April. Most engines came over from the old car but were renamed Duratec, with Zetec kept for the sportier ones, and the initial trims were Finesse, LX, Zetec and Ghia. It was the first Fiesta with anti-lock brakes and passenger airbags as standard, and the first to be sold in Asia and Australasia, where it replaced the Kia based Festiva.
