For 1984 the F-150 became the smallest version of the model line, following the retirement of the F-100, which had been the entry level F-Series pickup from 1953 to 1983. As a safety change, a clutch interlock prevented the engine starting without depressing the clutch pedal. To further combat corrosion, Ford increased the use of galvanized and pretreated steel body panels, a long running concern of the seventh generation's development.
