Production of the Explorer EV started at the Cologne plant in June 2024, after Ford announced in August 2023 that its launch would be pushed back from the end of 2023 because of new battery regulations. It was revealed on 21 March 2023 and is built on the Volkswagen MEB platform. The Explorer EV is an all electric small SUV that Ford builds in Cologne on a Volkswagen platform for European buyers. It shares its name and design with the larger American Explorer, and uses a Volkswagen supplied powertrain.
