The Escort received a facelift in Britain in 1972, which also led Ford New Zealand to revise the trim levels of the cars it assembled at Lower Hutt. In France the tiny 940 cc engine, once offered to dodge tax in Italy and France, was dropped during the year, though it carried on in Italy. The Mark I continued as a two door and four door saloon, a two door estate and a panel van, with 1100 and 1300 cc engines as the main sellers.
