The second generation Crown Victoria went on sale on 26 December 1997. In an effort to gain acceptance among buyers, and to increase the number of parts shared with its twin, it adopted much of the exterior design of the Mercury Grand Marquis for the 1998 model year. The Police Interceptor version, called the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, was offered from 1998 until 2011. It was built at Ford Canada's St. Thomas plant, as its twin was.
