As a move to increase fuel economy, the 351 cubic inch V8 was reintroduced for 1978. The 1978 Country Squire was nearly identical to the 1975 to 1977 models except for small differences in trim and emblems, with the 400M V8 standard and the 429 and 460 V8s optional, and a three speed C6 automatic as the only transmission, as the last of the seventh generation before downsizing. The Country Squire was the top level Ford station wagon, distinguished by woodgrain bodyside trim.
