For 1951 the Country Squire retained the dashboard of the 1950 Ford with the 1951 steering column, and Ford outsourced final assembly, contracting the Ionia Body Company, an assembler of wood bodied station wagons for General Motors. As a true woodie, assembly was labor intensive, with initial assembly of the steel body at the Dearborn Assembly Plant, shipment to the Iron Mountain plant for wood paneling, and return to Ford facilities for final assembly. A 3 speed Ford O Matic automatic became an option.
