For 1961 the engines of the Country Squire were detuned, with the six making 135 horsepower, the 292 V8 175 horsepower and the 352 220 horsepower, and the rear tailgate underwent a complete redesign, abandoning the two piece tailgate for a one piece tailgate with a roll down window. The front and rear fascias were redesigned, marking the return of small tailfins and large round taillamps in line with the Ford Thunderbird. Mercury revised its Colony Park to a Ford based design.
