The 1988 Bronco II was a compact SUV derived from the Ranger, produced in a single generation as a three door wagon at the Louisville Assembly Plant. It was powered by the 140 horsepower fuel injected 2.9 liter Cologne V6 with rear wheel drive as standard and four wheel drive as an option. Stability problems with the Bronco II had been noted in the design phase and in tests by 1981. It was produced alongside the Ranger in Louisville, Kentucky from January 1983 to January 1990.
