A Mitsubishi four cylinder 2.3 liter turbodiesel was optional during the 1986 and 1987 model years but delivered poor performance and had low sales. The 140 horsepower fuel injected 2.9 liter Cologne V6 was the main engine. In 1987 there were 43 Bronco II rollover fatalities, compared with eight for the Suzuki Samurai, as reported later, although accident data in four states showed the Bronco II's rollover rate was similar to other SUVs.
