The Honda FCX, short for Fuel Cell eXperimental, is a family of hydrogen fuel cell cars built by Honda. The first prototype, a four-door, four-seat vehicle launched in 1999, used a Ballard fuel cell of 78 kilowatts. Together with the Toyota FCHV, which began leasing on 2 December 2002, the FCX became one of the world's first government-certified commercial hydrogen fuel cell vehicles; it was certified by the US EPA and the California Air Resources Board in 2002 and went to customers including Los Angeles, San Francisco and the state of New York. The later 2002 car was a three-door four-seat hatchback with front-wheel drive, and the line led to the FCX Clarity, which began limited marketing in June 2008.
