The GEM eL XD is the heavy-duty utility model of the GEM neighborhood electric vehicle, built by Global Electric Motorcars of Fargo, North Dakota. It is a heavier duty version of the GEM with a 70 by 48 inch (1,780 by 1,220 mm) cargo bed that comes in several configurations and a payload of 1,100 lb (500 kg). It was first produced in December 2007, while the company was a subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler and then Chrysler Group, before Polaris bought GEM in 2011. Like the passenger models it is battery-electric on a 72-volt system, recharges from a standard 120-volt outlet and is limited to 25 mph (40 km/h). GEM redesigned it in October 2016 together with the e2, e4 and e6, including lithium-ion battery offerings.
