As the 1980s progressed, fewer private customers purchased the Diplomat, and the M body was eventually dropped during the 1989 model year. The 1985 Diplomat was a rear wheel drive four door sedan with the 318 cubic inch V8 and a three speed TorqueFlite automatic, with the SE and Salon trim levels. In 1985 the Chrysler Corporation and AMC had a contract to build the cars at Kenosha, Wisconsin. It was sold with the Plymouth Gran Fury and the Chrysler Fifth Avenue.
