The Rambler Tarpon was a youth-oriented 2+2 fastback hardtop concept that the Rambler division of American Motors developed in 1963 and showed from January 1964. Dick Teague's team built it on the new Rambler American convertible chassis with a 106 inch wheelbase, a two inch lower roof, a reinforced plastic top section and polished 13 inch aluminium wheels. Its red body with a black vinyl roof drew crowds at the Chicago and New York shows, and a survey found more than sixty percent of visitors liked the fastback styling. It never entered production because AMC lacked money for new tooling, but it foretold the larger Rambler Marlin of 1965.
