The Plymouth Explorer was a concept car, a coupe that Plymouth showed in 1954. Its design is credited to Luigi Segre at the Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Ghia, who had worked out the same styling themes on the earlier Dodge Firearrow show cars, and Chrysler presented it in 1954 as the latest of its Forward Look dream cars. Under the Ghia body it used an ordinary Plymouth chassis with a 114 inch wheelbase and a 230 cubic inch Plymouth inline six cylinder engine rated at 110 horsepower, driving through a semi-automatic transmission. As a concept car it was built to show styling ideas to the public rather than to be sold, which makes it a record of how Plymouth and Chrysler imagined their cars in the middle of the 1950s.
