The Mitsubishi Galant Lambda, written Galant with the Greek letter, was a two-door, four-seat hardtop coupe that Mitsubishi built from 1976 until 1984. It reached Japanese showrooms in December 1976 as a personal luxury car even though Mitsubishi already sold the Lancer-based Celeste coupe, and from 1978 it was exported as the Mitsubishi Sapporo in Europe and South America, as the Dodge Colt Challenger and Plymouth Sapporo in North America, and as the Chrysler Sigma Scorpion in Australia. It had frameless door glass with no centre pillar and a range of engines from diesels and naturally aspirated petrol units to the turbocharged 2.0 litre 4G63T in the GSR, which also had independent rear suspension. The 2.6 litre Astron engine introduced Mitsubishi's Silent Shaft balance shafts. The GSR was the forerunner of the Starion, and the car was dropped in North America after 1983 as Diamond-Star Motors and the Mitsubishi brand arrived.
