The CL-Class was the grand touring coupe of Mercedes-Benz, built from 1992 to 2014 on the platform of the S-Class and positioned as the premier model of the range. The letters stand for Coupe Luxusklasse. Earlier called the SEC and then the S-Coupe, it took the CL name in 1996. The first generation, coded C140, ran from 1992 to 1998 and included the first V12 coupe the maker ever offered. The second generation, C215, was built from 1998 to 2006 under DaimlerChrysler on a shorter S-Class W220 wheelbase, and was the only pillarless hardtop in production until the CLK went pillarless in 2001.
