The Jaguar XK8, project code X100, is a grand tourer that Jaguar Cars launched in 1996 as the first generation of a new XK series, offered as a two-door coupé or two-door convertible with the new 4.0-litre Jaguar AJ-V8 engine. A supercharged XKR, using an Eaton supercharger shared with the Ford F-150 SVT Lightning, arrived in May 1998, and in 2003 the engines were replaced by 4.2-litre AJ34 units in both naturally aspirated and supercharged form. It shared its XJS-derived platform with the Aston Martin DB7, both cars tracing their history to an abandoned Jaguar development study of the mid-1980s, known as XJ41/XJ42 and mooted to be called the F-Type, a project cancelled when Ford took over Jaguar in 1989. Development began in 1992 and the car used the second-generation Jaguar independent rear suspension taken from the XJ40. Production of the XK8 and XKR ceased on 27 May 2005, and between 1996 and 2005 Jaguar built 90,064 XKs; limited editions included the XKR Silverstone of 2000 and the Carbon Fibre Edition.
