The Citroen SM is a high-performance coupe that the French manufacturer Citroen produced from 1970 to 1975. It grew out of Project S, begun in 1961 as a sports variant of the DS and developed over nine years into a thoroughly new car, and it carries a Maserati V6 because Citroen bought Maserati in 1968 to draw on its engine technology. Shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1970 and on sale in France that September, it was kept to a 2.7 litre engine by the French horsepower tax on luxury cars. The SM placed third in the 1971 European Car of the Year contest behind the GS and won the 1972 Motor Trend Car of the Year award in the United States.
