The BMW 327 was a medium-sized touring coupé that BMW produced between 1937 and 1941 and again after 1945, built on a shortened version of the 326 chassis. The first car, launched in 1937, was a cabriolet, and a fixed head coupé joined it in 1938; both were lower and shorter than the 326 sedan but kept the BMW grille and a streamlined form. It used the hydraulic brake control, gearbox, clutch and front suspension first seen on the 326, with the live axle of the 320 and 328 and the M78 straight-six engine, and had an advertised top speed of 125 km/h. A more powerful 327/28 with the M328 engine was built in 569 examples up to 1940. Postwar assembly resumed at Eisenach under Awtowelo and later as the EMW 327, and the cars were badged BMW or EMW after a long dispute over the BMW name.
