The R170 is the first generation of the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class, a compact luxury roadster manufactured from 1996 until 2004 on a shortened W202 C-Class platform. It grew out of two concept cars, the SLK I shown at Turin in early 1994 and the SLK II at Paris late that year, and the production car was introduced at the Turin Motor Show on 22 April 1996, with mass production starting in July 1996. It had a folding metal roof that the maker called the Vario roof, taking 25 seconds to operate, and a 2,400 millimetre wheelbase identical to the 190SL and 300SL. More than 300,000 were built, and the Chrysler Crossfire shares 80 percent of its components with it.
