The R129 is the fourth generation of the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, a two-door roadster produced from 1988 until 2001 that replaced the R107 in 1989 and was replaced by the R230. It had an automated electro-hydraulic fabric roof, a colour-matched tonneau cover and a removable hardtop, and it came with a range of powertrains over its twelve years, including the V12 of the SL600. It was designed in 1984 on the shortened floorpan of the W124 and presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1989, runner-up for European Car of the Year. It brought electronically controlled damping, an automatic roll bar and a multi-link rear axle. The last years of production fell under DaimlerChrysler.
