Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

Automobiles

The SL-Class is the grand touring sports car of Mercedes-Benz, built since 1954 and named for the German words Super-Leicht, meaning super light. It began with the 300 SL, a road version of a racing car with gullwing doors, and the roadster that followed it in 1957. The line passed through the W113, R107, R129 and R230 generations. The R230 of 2000 to 2011 was built under DaimlerChrysler and brought a retractable hardtop called the Vario Roof, the Active Body Control suspension and the Sensotronic Brake Control brake-by-wire system, which proved troublesome and led to a large recall. Since 2022 the car is marketed as the Mercedes-AMG SL.
