The Ford Vega was a one-off lightweight two-seat roadster, the winning entry in a Ford-sponsored automotive design contest completed in 1953. It answered the sports cars that returning American servicemen were bringing home from Europe and General Motors' new Corvette. The contest rules required a British Ford Anglia chassis carrying a Phil Weiand-built Ford flathead V8 with dual carburetors, and the winning body design by Vince Gardner, with Cord-inspired pop-up headlamps, was beaten out of aluminium by Emil Deidt. Only one car was ever made and it never entered production, but it helped spur Ford's interest in the two-seat Thunderbird of 1955. It was sold at auction in 2006 for $385,000.
